One dead in another sterilisation camp
12 women critical at Guarella in Chhattisgarh
A day after the death of 11 women who had undergone sterilisation in Bilaspur, the death of one more woman at another mass family planning camp in the same district of Chhattisgarh has come to light. Twelve more women were in a critical condition on Wednesday in Guarella, where a sterilisation camp was held on November 10. A total of 56 women underwent the procedure at the camp. “One woman has died and 12 are critical. They have been brought to the CIMS [Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences]. All of them are showing the same symptoms as the victims of the Pendhari camp,” Bilaspur Mayor Vani Rao told The Hindu. According to Ms. Rao, Chaitibai of Dhanoli village died when she was being brought to Bilaspur. “The deceased woman belonged to the protected Baiga tribe. They are not supposed to undergo sterilisation,” Ms. Rao added.
CIMS medical superintendent R. Murthi confirmed to The Hindu that nearly 50 women from Guarella were undergoing treatment in his hospital.
Chhattisgarh Health Minister Amar Agrawal denied any knowledge of the Guarella incident. “I have no information if any such thing has been reported from other parts of Bilaspur,” he said.
