Man arrested on rape charge
A 24-year-old man was arrested and remanded in custody on Saturday on charges of raping a minor girl from Cuddalore on the promise of marriage.
The accused, Sivashankar, a resident from Bahour area, lured the girl, 16, to Puducherry on the pretext of meeting his parents, said Vidyaa Ramkumar, chairperson, Child Welfare Committee. An auto driver, Veerappan, 39, picked the two from the Puducherry bus stand and dropped them at a secluded construction site. The girl was raped there and taken to Villianur bus stop by the accused the next day.
When policemen on duty there questioned them, the girl narrated the events. The matter was reported to the CWC and a complaint was filed based on it. The girl will be subjected to medical examination and is currently in institutional care, said Ms. Ramkumar.
The police have registered a case under Section 376 Indian Penal Code (rape) and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, against Mr. Sivashankar, said Sub-Inspector Jaishankar.
They have also registered a case of kidnapping under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code against the auto driver, he added.
