Dalits, the self-designated term for Untouchables meaning "depressed", are at the very bottom of India's caste system. Dalits are discriminated against, denied access to land, and forced to work in degrading situations.
Discriminating against Untouchables was abolished in India in 1950, however Dalits still do not have the same rights as the higher castes in India.
90% of Indians living below the poverty line are Dalit. Men earn about 40 rupees (88 cents) per day and women earn 30 (66 cents).
The Dalits are deprived of human dignity and equality. According to Hindu Law, they do not have the right to an education. Therefore it is near impossible for the Dalits to escape their current situation.
